Rights to double pay

  • Jill January 2010
I worked boxing day 2009 which was on a saturday, i did ten hours and believed i would be paid double time for my shift i
found out last night that the manager has just decided to make the 28th the holiday and altered my time sheet so i only get paid my normal rate i feel cheated as i worked all over xmas and new year yet people who had the holiday off but worked the 28th get more pay than me i was not on duty on the 28th

Changing the holiday and pay status of a day that has already past and been worked by staff sounds a bit unfair, especially if it's a known holiday. Tell your manager you're not happy and that you expect to be paid double time as you worked under that premise, and wouldn't have worked otherwise. If they say no then ask for an extra day of paid holidays in lieu. Is there an accounts dept. in your work?

we have a part time accounts person, who is very hard to catch in his office, the girls have discussed with the manager the possibility of staff refusing to work xmas 2010 as they land on a weekend so would be paid at normal rate the manager then said she would not be held to ransom and could find new staff easier than we would find new jobs

I would try and talk to the accounts person if you can. I imagine they would be easier to deal with and should be able to tell you where you stand legally. I wouldn't get into discussing boycotting xmas work in 2010 as this will only annoy your manager and reduce your chances of getting the double pay your after. I would stick to the point of why they moved a double pay holiday day after it had already been worked. Also highlight the fact you worked all over Christmas and that this is not exactly a great incentive for you to work so hard in future.

In Ireland there is a site called citizensinformation.ie that has some useful guideline information. You may be able to find something similar for the UK.
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/employment-rights-and-conditions

There is also an association in Ireland called NERA that offer free advice for employees.

Must be something similar in the UK. Let us know how it goes!

You have a reason to be pissed off, the little sh!tbag, he shouldn't be moving it around to try and screw you out of your pay. Probably looking after his mates!

Well, if there is any more trouble on Boxing day just put on the boxing gloves and box the manager's head off!!!
